The existing backyard had a small, elevated wooden deck with a five-step staircase leading down to the yard. The homeowners wanted to replace the wood deck with a larger, more functional outdoor living space. Their vision was low-maintenance composite decking, a motorized louvered pergola for adjustable shade, and upgraded railings to create a more comfortable space for relaxing and entertaining.
Project Details
This backyard transformation combines premium Trex composite decking with a commercial-grade motorized pergola, creating a comfortable, low-maintenance outdoor living space built for Chicago’s changing weather.
Trex Transcend Lineage Composite Decking
The homeowners selected Trex Transcend Lineage composite decking for its refined appearance, durability, and low-maintenance performance. Unlike traditional wood decking, it doesn’t require sanding, staining, or sealing, making it easier to maintain while providing a durable surface for everyday use.
Commercial-Grade Motorized Louvered Pergola
To complete the outdoor space, the homeowners chose a commercial-grade motorized louvered pergola engineered to handle Chicago’s demanding weather conditions. The adjustable louvers allow them to control sunlight, shade, and airflow while providing protection from rain and snow.
Built for long-term performance, the pergola is engineered to withstand snow loads of up to 70 pounds per square foot and wind speeds of up to 160 mph.
Cable Railings, Privacy Wall, and 6-Step Stairs
Key-Link cable railings maintain open sightlines across the deck without compromising safety. A custom privacy wall adds separation and creates a more secluded setting, while a six-step staircase provides convenient access between the elevated deck and backyard.
